The SA8000 Certification Process

Who can audit you, what they actually do on site, and why this audit is unlike any other certification you have been through.

Who can certify you

SA8000 is owned by Social Accountability International, and certification is performed by certification bodies accredited by Social Accountability Accreditation Services. Not by a consultancy, and not by a certification body that merely says it does SA8000 — accreditation for this standard specifically is what matters.

A consultancy cannot certify you, and one that prepared you also cannot audit you. Avantcert prepares you and works alongside accredited bodies who perform the audit. Any firm claiming to issue an SA8000 certificate itself is describing something that is not accredited certification.

Auditors also require specific SA8000 competence — this is not a standard a general ISO auditor picks up alongside others, because the interview technique and the labour subject matter are specialised.

The worker interviews

This is what makes an SA8000 audit different from every other certification audit, and it is worth preparing for honestly.

Auditors interview workers privately. Selection is theirs, not yours. Interviews are confidential, frequently conducted away from supervisors, and in the workers' own language. Off-site interviews and interviews with worker representatives or local labour organizations are part of the method.

What this means practically: you cannot document your way through an SA8000 audit. If recorded hours and actual hours differ, workers will say so. If a grievance mechanism exists on paper and nobody has used it or trusts it, that emerges in interviews.

Coaching workers is the fastest route to failure. Auditors are trained to detect it, and it is treated as a serious finding in its own right — worse than the underlying issue would have been.

The productive preparation is to fix the conditions and to make sure workers genuinely know their rights and the grievance route, which is a requirement anyway.

The nine elements audited

Child labour · forced or compulsory labour · health and safety · freedom of association and collective bargaining · discrimination · disciplinary practices · working hours · remuneration · and the management system that operates the other eight.

The management system element is what makes the rest auditable. It requires a policy, assigned responsibilities, risk assessment, worker involvement, complaint handling, supplier management, internal review and corrective action — so an auditor can test whether the other elements are operated rather than merely asserted.

Validity and maintaining it

An SA8000 certificate is valid three years, with surveillance audits every six months — twice the frequency of most ISO standards, because labour conditions can change faster than a documented system does.

Surveillance is not a formality. It includes worker interviews again, and findings can suspend a certificate where conditions have deteriorated materially.

Recertification falls at the end of year three and is a full audit rather than an extended surveillance visit.

FAQs

Who can perform SA8000 certification audits?

Certification bodies accredited by Social Accountability Accreditation Services specifically for SA8000. A consultancy cannot certify you, and a firm that prepared you cannot audit you. Auditors also need specific SA8000 competence, since the interview technique and labour subject matter are specialised rather than something a general ISO auditor covers.

What happens during an SA8000 audit?

A Stage 1 documentation review followed by an on-site Stage 2 that includes private worker interviews. Auditors select the workers, interview them confidentially and in their own language, and may conduct interviews off-site or with worker representatives and local labour organizations.

Can you prepare workers for an SA8000 audit?

You should ensure workers genuinely know their rights and how to use the grievance mechanism — that is a requirement of the standard. Coaching workers on what to say is different and is the fastest route to failure: auditors are trained to detect it and treat it as a serious finding in itself.

How long is SA8000 certification valid?

Three years, with surveillance audits every six months rather than annually as in most ISO standards. Surveillance includes worker interviews again and can suspend a certificate where conditions have materially deteriorated. Recertification at the end of year three is a full audit.

What are the nine elements of SA8000?

Child labour, forced or compulsory labour, health and safety, freedom of association and collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, remuneration, and the management system that operates the other eight and makes them auditable.
