ISO 26000 vs SA8000

One shapes how you think about social responsibility. Only the other gives you something to send a customer.

The short answer

ISO 26000 is guidance on social responsibility and cannot be certified. SA8000 is an auditable standard on labour and workplace practices and is certified by accredited bodies.

They are not competitors and you do not choose between them in the way the question implies. ISO 26000 helps you decide what social responsibility means for your organization across seven broad subjects. SA8000 proves a specific part of it to somebody who is asking.

If a customer, buyer or supplier programme is asking you to demonstrate something, the answer is almost always SA8000, because it produces a document that can be verified.

Side by side

Where they overlap

Two of ISO 26000's seven core subjects — human rights and labour practices — are substantially what SA8000 audits, in far more enforceable detail.

ISO 26000 core subjectCovered by SA8000?
Organizational governancePartly — SA8000 requires a management system
Human rightsYes, substantially
Labour practicesYes, in detail
The environmentNo
Fair operating practicesPartly, via supplier requirements
Consumer issuesNo
Community involvementNo

So SA8000 is narrower and deeper. It will not evidence your environmental or consumer practices — for those, ISO 14001 and other certifiable standards apply. What it does cover, it covers to an auditable depth ISO 26000 never attempts.

What SA8000 actually requires

Nine elements, each auditable: child labour, forced or compulsory labour, health and safety, freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, remuneration, and a management system holding it together.

The management system element is what makes it certifiable. It requires policy, responsibilities, risk assessment, worker involvement, complaint handling, supplier management, internal review and corrective action — the machinery that lets an auditor test whether the other eight elements are operated rather than merely stated.

See SA8000 certification and how the process runs.

Which one does your situation call for?

SituationWhat you need
A customer asked for proof of ethical labour practicesSA8000 — it is the certificate they can verify
A supplier programme names a social standardSA8000
You are working out what social responsibility means for youISO 26000 guidance, plus a gap assessment
You want a broad third-party view including environment and consumersISO 26000 attestation
You were told to "get ISO 26000 certified"Neither, as stated — see below

That last row is the common one. Somebody has asked for a document that does not exist. What they usually want is assurance about labour and human rights practices, and SA8000 is the recognised way to give it to them. An ISO 26000 attestation is the alternative when the ask is broader than labour.

Using both

The sequence that works for most organizations:

1. Gap-assess against ISO 26000. It is the broadest available map of social responsibility and it tells you where you actually stand across all seven subjects, including the ones no certificate covers.

2. Certify to SA8000 where proof is required. Usually labour and human rights, because that is what customers and supplier programmes ask about.

3. Add certifiable standards for the other subjects as demand arises — ISO 14001 for environment, ISO 45001 for health and safety.

The ISO 26000 work is not wasted when you move to SA8000. The human rights and labour findings transfer almost directly into the certification project.

FAQs

What is the difference between ISO 26000 and SA8000?

ISO 26000 is guidance on social responsibility covering seven broad core subjects, written in should rather than shall, and it cannot be certified. SA8000 is an auditable standard focused on labour and workplace practices, certified by accredited bodies. ISO 26000 helps you decide what to do; SA8000 proves part of it to a customer.

Can ISO 26000 be certified like SA8000?

No. ISO states explicitly that ISO 26000 is not intended or appropriate for certification and that any claim of certification to it is a misrepresentation. SA8000 is certifiable because it is written as auditable requirements with a management system behind them.

Does SA8000 cover everything in ISO 26000?

No. SA8000 substantially covers the human rights and labour practices core subjects and partly covers governance and fair operating practices through its management system and supplier requirements. It does not cover the environment, consumer issues or community involvement, which need other standards.

My customer asked for ISO 26000 certification — what should I get?

Usually SA8000, because it is the certifiable standard covering what they are most likely asking about, and it produces a document they can verify. If the request is genuinely broader than labour practices, an independent ISO 26000 attestation with a findings report is the honest alternative.

Should I do ISO 26000 before SA8000?

A gap assessment against ISO 26000 is a useful first step because it maps your whole position, including areas no certificate covers. But if a customer is waiting for proof, go straight to SA8000 — and the human rights and labour findings from any ISO 26000 work transfer almost directly into it.
