What Is AS9100?

AS9100 is the internationally recognized quality management system (QMS) standard for the aviation, space, and defense industry. Built on ISO 9001, it adds around 100 aerospace-specific requirements covering safety, reliability, risk management, configuration control, and counterfeit-part prevention.

Maintained by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG), AS9100 (current revision Rev D) is effectively mandatory for suppliers to aerospace primes and OEMs, whose certificates are listed in the OASIS database. Avantcert helps aerospace manufacturers and suppliers implement and certify to AS9100 efficiently.

Why is AS9100 Certification Important?

AS9100 is the quality management standard the aviation, space, and defense sector uses to qualify its supply base. It is maintained by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) and published regionally as AS9100 in the Americas, EN 9100 in Europe, and JIS Q 9100 in Asia, so a certificate earned under one is recognized under the others. At its core, the current revision, AS9100 Rev D, contains the full text of ISO 9001:2015 and layers roughly 100 additional aerospace requirements on top: product safety, counterfeit-part prevention, configuration management, risk management, and first-article inspection. It keeps the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and the risk-based thinking ISO 9001 introduced, then applies them in a setting where an escaped defect becomes a safety event rather than a customer complaint. What sets it apart from a general QMS: AS9100 certification is public and verifiable. Certificates are issued by certification bodies working under the IAQG's own oversight scheme and recorded in the OASIS database, where primes and OEMs check supplier status directly rather than taking your word for it. That register is why aerospace buyers treat AS9100 as a condition of doing business, and why a lapsed or suspended certificate becomes visible to your customers almost immediately.

Key Insight

The aerospace sector demands precision. AS9100 certification is the prerequisite for entering global supply chains, verifying your ability to deliver safe and reliable products.

AS9100 Rev D: What the Standard Covers

AS9100 is the quality management standard for the aviation, space, and defense industry. It builds on ISO 9001 and adds aerospace-specific requirements for safety, reliability, risk management, configuration control, and counterfeit-part prevention. The current revision is AS9100 Rev D.

AS9100 vs ISO 9001: What's the Difference?

AS9100 includes the full text of ISO 9001 and then layers roughly 100 additional aerospace requirements on top. If you supply the aerospace sector, primes and OEMs will typically require AS9100 rather than ISO 9001 alone, and your certificate is listed in the OASIS database.

How Long and How Much Does AS9100 Certification Cost?

Organizations with a mature ISO 9001 system often reach AS9100 in 3 to 6 months; cost depends on site count and scope. Request a free AS9100 quote for a tailored estimate.

Key Principles

The framework is built on fundamental principles that guide implementation and ensure effectiveness:

Leadership

Leaders at all levels establish unity of purpose and direction and create conditions in which people are engaged in achieving the organization's quality objectives.

Engagement of People

Competent, empowered, and engaged people at all levels throughout the organization are essential to enhance its capability to create and deliver value.

Process Approach

Consistent and predictable results are achieved more effectively and efficiently when activities are understood and managed as interrelated processes that function as a coherent system.

Improvement

Successful organizations have an ongoing focus on improvement.

Evidence-based Decision Making

Decisions based on the analysis and evaluation of data and information are more likely to produce desired results.

Relationship Management

For sustained success, an organization manages its relationships with interested parties, such as suppliers.

What AS9100 Adds on Top of ISO 9001

AS9100 contains the complete text of ISO 9001 and then adds roughly 100 aerospace-specific requirements. If you already hold ISO 9001, those additions are the whole of your gap — and they cluster in areas a general QMS never has to address.

Added areaWhat AS9100 requires that ISO 9001 does not
Counterfeit part preventionA defined process to prevent counterfeit or suspect-unapproved parts entering the supply chain — the single most common gap for new AS9100 applicants
Configuration managementFormal control of product configuration and change through the lifecycle
Product safetySafety treated as a planned, assessed output, not an emergent property
Special requirements & critical itemsIdentification of critical items and key characteristics, and controls that follow them
First Article InspectionA formal FAI per AS9102, with a documented report — a hard requirement, not a recommendation
Risk in product realizationOperational risk managed at the product level, beyond ISO 9001's organizational risk thinking
Supply chain flowdownApplicable requirements contractually passed to your own suppliers and evidenced

A mature ISO 9001 system typically reaches AS9100 in three to six months because the management-system scaffolding already exists. The work is in the rows above.

Your Certificate Has to Appear in OASIS

An AS9100 certificate that is not published in the OASIS database will not satisfy most primes. OASIS — the Online Aerospace Supplier Information System, run by the IAQG — is where aerospace buyers verify certification, and it is the reason AS9100 cannot be treated like an ordinary ISO certificate.

Two consequences that catch suppliers out:

Your certification body must be accredited to certify to AS9100 specifically. Accreditation for ISO 9001 does not carry over. A certificate from a body outside the IAQG scheme will not appear in OASIS, and a buyer checking the database will not find you.

The audit result is visible. Findings and the certification status are recorded in the scheme, so the audit is not a private matter between you and your auditor in the way an ISO 9001 audit effectively is.

Confirm the accreditation before you sign with a certification body. It is the one procurement decision in an AS9100 programme that is genuinely hard to undo.

How AS9100 Certification Is Priced

Certification-body fees are charged per audit day, and the number of audit days is set by headcount, site count and scope — not negotiated. That makes the audit half of your cost largely predictable once your scope is fixed, and it is why reducing scope is the only real lever on it.

There are two separate bills, and conflating them is the most common budgeting error:

Preparation. Gap analysis against the added requirements above, closing them, building the evidence, and internal audit. This is where an existing ISO 9001 system pays for itself.

Certification body audit. Stage 1 and Stage 2, priced by audit day, then surveillance audits in years two and three and recertification in year three.

Cost drivers, in the order they matter: number of sites, employee headcount, whether you carry design responsibility, and the complexity of your supply chain. Design responsibility is the biggest single multiplier — it brings the design-control clauses fully into scope.
